PAY ATTENTION
Is that not typical of Nigerians? Do you remember, during the campaigns for the 2015 General Elections many actually said former President Goodluck Jonathan was too weak and that we needed a strong man in the person of President Mohammadu Buhari, today we have the strong man in place because we don't appreciate easy things. But the Good News is:
I just hope we are learning as a people? then again this page is not about politics. How do we learn? The first step to learning, to changing your life, to making a difference is to "Pay Attention" sounds simple, but it's about one of the most challenging request to demand from anyone in a world that is filled with so much distractions
HOW DO WE LEARN?
“Silence is not only golden;
it is seldom misquoted”
~ Bob Monkhouse
A woman was constantly having difficulty in
her marriage as her late night keeping and drink loving husband will often come
home late and when she expresses her anger over his lateness, she receives the
beating of a life from him. Tired of been battered almost daily she
approached my late Mum and sought advice.
Mother (May her Soul Continue to rest in the
bosom of the Lord) advised her to keep quite when he returns home late, she
responded that she can’t keep quite when she is angry, Mum advised that she
talk to herself instead of talking to her husband. She accepted her advice and practiced
talking to herself instead of quarreling with her husband.
The next night when the husband returned
home, she opened the door for him went into her wardrobe and poured out all the
venom on the man, when she was drained of anger she returned to attend to him
and prepared Food for him. To cut a long story short, she not only avoided the beating,
she saved her marriage. Silence is golden. Lesson learnt, result achieved.
The Dalai Lama said “When you talk, you are
repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something
new.” A rare quality of outstandingly successful men and women is their ability
to listen to others, to learn from everyone and every situation. To listen means to give attention to something or someone.
This is very difficult for most of us to do now, why? As Chuck Palahniu noted “People
don’t listen, they wait for their turn to talk.”
The Human Mind is so magnificent, so much so
that you can be in one place physically but in your mind you are somewhere else
coupled with the fact that we longer live for the moment, we chase the next
moment consistently. Eckhart Tolle said “Unease,
anxiety, tension, stress, worry – all forms of fear – are caused by too much
future, and not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances,
sadness, bitterness, and all forms of non-forgiveness are caused by too much
past, and not enough presence.” Abraham Maslow puts it this way “The ability to
be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness.” And you need that mental wellness to learn.
Dr. David Oyedepo said the one phrase that spurred his unquenchable quest for knowledge is "If you want to hide anything from a black man, put it in a book" read that again and let it awaken your quest for more knowledge.
