A CASE OF TWO PDP IN NIGERIA
PDP BURUTU LEADERSHIP IMPASSE – NEED FOR URGENT RESOLUTION
I must have read the Press Statement released
by the PDP National Publicity Secretary Chief Oliseh Metuh a thousand times and
can’t help but imagine if we have Two People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in
Nigeria?
Chief Metuh said “credit must be given to President Jonathan
for his insistence on free, fair and credible election at all levels …………..”
Charity they say begins at Home, 10th March, 2012, members of The Peoples Democratic
Party in Burutu Local Government Area had a very Peaceful, free and fair
congress with Segbegha Korokorosei emerging as Chairman of the Exco at the
Council Area.
However, as it has been in
recent times and as far as interest groups go, some members of the Party who
are highly placed in and outside Government and would have preferred another
candidate for reasons best known to them, decided to have candidates who did
not even took part in the Congress and went ahead to Swear in Kenneth Ogbeibiri
on 1st October, 2012.
A firm believer in the Rule of
Law and a democrat to the core Sagbegha Korokorosei took the matter to Court In
SUIT NO.: FHC/WR/CS/189/2013 and after Months of Legal Tussle on 5th
March, 2014 The Honourable Justice M. Shitu Abubakar of The Federal High Court
in The Warri Judicial Division gave a landmark Judgment granting all 11 reliefs
sought by the Plaintiff Sagbegha Korokorosei. The Learned Judge went on to give
a Judgment Order directing the IMMEDIATE swearing in or to
administer the oath of office on the Plaintiff Sagbegha Korokorosei.
It’s been four Months since that
Landmark Judgment was delivered; Sagbegha Korokorosei is yet to be recognized
as the duly elected Chairman of The Peoples Democratic Party in and for Burutu
Local Government Area of Delta State. Perhaps President Jonathan’s insistence on free, fair and credible
election at all levels did not include Burutu local Government Area
We have kept this issue in the
public discourse because as Martin
Luther King Jr. noted “Injustice anywhere is a Threat to Justice
everywhere” the media has the power to influence Government Policies,
we can prevail on those at the helm of affairs in The Peoples Democratic Party
at the National and State levels to do the right thing.
It was Elie Wiesel who remarked that “There may be times when we are powerless to
prevent Injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest” we
must collectively raise our voice against this Injustice. As Benjamin Franklin
said “Justice
will not be served until those who are unaffected are outraged as those who are”
Ella Wheeler Wilcox puts it succinctly “To sin by silence, when they should
protest, makes cowards of men”
Injustice is Injustice. “Where
Justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and
where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to
oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe” ~ Fredrick
Douglas
The statement said
Governor Fayemi “exhibited the spirit of sportsmanship propagated and practiced
by the PDP and President Goodluck Jonathan” even as it called on politicians in
the country to “imbibe the same spirit and jettison all forms of bad loser
syndrome especially ahead of the 2015 general elections.”
This is an advice that
Kenneth Ogbeibiri and those backing him to walk the path of Impunity need to
heed.
Join the Crusade The Rule of Law
Must Prevail in The PDP Burutu Local Government Area.
