WEEKLY STIMULANTS: DOUBT YOUR BELIEVES 5
GOAL SETTING
“The trouble with not having a goal is that
you can spend your life running up and down
the field and never score.”
~ Bill Copeland
What will
be, will be is a language of the indolent, what will happen will only happen if
you make it happen. No one ever climbs a Tree with their hands in their
pockets and life is an uphill task. If you must get anywhere in life, you have to embark on the journey.
Success is swimming
against the tide; it involves pushing the frontiers, breaking new grounds. It’s
an inner knowing that doing what you are used to doing and expecting a
different outcome is madness, its bettering your best on a daily basis. Doing that
involves a little notch we call Goal Setting.
Forget the
mumble jumble you may have heard about Goal Setting, its simply projecting your
life forward in an organized way. Whether you plan for the future or not, you
will get there, why not get there prepared? Planned? Remember success is when
opportunity meets preparation.
If you have
ever gone to bed with a determination to watch your cloths the next morning and
you accomplished that, you have actually set a goal and fulfilled it. All we
are saying is doing that same thing in a much more organized way in longer time
frame and consistent pattern. Where will you like to be in December 2018? How about
2019? Project yourself forward and instill in yourself the discipline to follow
the path you have outlined for yourself is goal setting, simple.
A FEW TIPS:
We can’t
talk about Goals without mentioning the fact that they must be SMART!
1)
S
– Goals Must Be “SPECIFIC”: There is an old saying that if you pursue two rats
at the same time, it’s likely you will miss both. Make your goals specific and
motivating. Having a clear cut “Why” for what you intend to accomplish makes it
motivating and much more stimulating to go after. If you don’t know where you
are going a wise man said, every place will look like it.
2)
M
– “MEASUREABLE”: Goals must be Measureable with precise dates. Back in 2001, I told
myself and everyone that cared to listen that I will be married in October of
that same year, even though I have not met the woman I will marry. The woman that
became my wife showed up in April of that same year and we were Gloriously
Married guess when? October.
3)
A
– “ATTAINABLE”: It’s ok to think big, it’s ok to dare the impossible after all
if we can believe all things are possible to him that believes. Make your goals
attainable. Be practical in your approach to goal setting. Setting a goal to
read Five Books a Week, when you have never read One in a Month is
unattainable. However resist the urge to set goals that will not require any
form of discipline to accomplish.
4)
R
– “RELEVANT”: Set Goals that is relevant to your career. It helps drive focus. If
you don’t love what you do, it’s very unlikely that you will have focus in its
pursuit.
5)
T
– “TIME-BOUND”: You must have a deadline. Back in 2001, I was specific about
the date as October and it came to pass.
Project yourself twelve Months from today, who do you see
emerging from the you of today? Now get to work and make it happen.
It Ok to doubt what you had been taught to believe
