ANY ATTEMPT TO ATTACK NIGERIA'S PRESIDENT IS A THREAT TO NIGERIA'S UNITY.
I write as a former President of the most
corrosive and militant movement in Sub-Sahara Africa.
I have watched with great pains the disrespect most misguided and disgruntled
elements of our political class have gone awash with inciting statements
against Mr. President and indeed the ruling party.
Most of the argument advanced bothered on claim of a clueless and weak
President. What was mere social media display of hate is now being displayed
even before the president’s campaign organization.
To the extent where Gen Buhari and indeed the APC directed its supporters in
Bauchi and Kastina to stone and molest a Commander in Chief whose humble
disposition is the reason for which he was in the first place referred to as
weak.
May I posit that the President needs stamp his feet down and exercise some
constitutional powers in clamping down on persons for felony and treason. An
attempt at all by whoever to attack a Nigeria President is a call for war and a
threat to the entire country.
Whereas Gen Buhari and the APC cohort are allowed to campaign freely around our
Niger Delta area and given necessary support in places like Delta, Bayelsa,
Rivers, Akwa Ibom etc, the PDP is being prevented in the Northern Nigeria from
free movement to the extent of attempt to stone the president’s convoy.
Never in the history of our country has any Nigerians’ President has been so
undermined by any section or region.
The time is therefore ripe for President Jonathan to use the powers provided
for, by the Constitution to protect himself and other innocent Nigerians by
whatever means necessary.
If Mr. President truly wants peace he must then be prepared to give war to all
those bad elements trying to destroy our common destiny as a nation.
As a former President of Ijaw Youth Council who championed the nonviolence
resolution of our Niger-Delta crisis I am worried what will be of Nigeria if
our people return to the creeks and demand our son to return home so Nigeria
can be left alone?
The Buhari supporters have shown great disaffection for the rest of us.
I wish to warn that the Niger Delta people are not afraid of a disintegrated
Nigeria.
We have been the reason that the entity called Nigeria has remained united, our
oil made it so politically and we have continued to do so. It took Isaac Adaka
Boro and a host of other Niger Delta soldiers to stand with the federal troops
during the Civil war for the FGN to survive the civil war.
It took a President Jonathan, Dr. Chris Ekiyor, a T.K Ogoriba, Asari Dokubo, a
Tompolo , an Ateke Tom, a Kingsley Kuku, a Shoot At Sight, and a host of other
committed Niger Deltans to support late president Yar’adua to resolve the Niger
Delta crisis that was about breaking our country.
President Jonathan made promises of transformation in the following sectors
namely 1. Agriculture 2.Education 3. Health 4. Transportation and 5. Security
Can any Nigerian truly say where we were before GEJ presidency in any of these
sectors? Certainly even the blind would admit some major improvement has been
made.
Some will say what about security?
Now tell me if the GEJ administration was not up and doing in their assign
security responsibly I am sure by now Nigeria would have been history. Our
Armed Forces are working to protect us. Nigeria is in a war and Jonathan is a
war time President. If Jonathan was to be over ambitious ordinarily there would
have a shift of all election until peace returns but he has opted for a
democratic process that allows citizens to choose.
While Nigerians have a right to support whoever we chose to, supporters must
conduct themselves in manners that do not over heat the polity.
Haven seen Buhari’s reflection from the minds of his supporters and haven known
that Buhari lacks the pedigree and character he parades. I do not think he is
capable of ruling Nigeria. A man whose supporters are always on rampage at
every little opportunity speaks volume of his character.
Dr. (Chief) Chris Ekiyor is a former President of Ijaw Youth Council – IYC
